It is said that cashmere production started in the 13th century, in the Kashmir region in the north India. Its luxurious feel made it much sought after by rulers of Persia and Indian for religious and royal ceremonies. In the 18th century, Europeans traders learnt of the special qualities of cashmere and started importing it to Europe, especially to Scotland and France, where its popularity exploded. Nowadays, cashmere fibre comes mainly from China and Mongolia.
